The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program has added fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to the food vouchers provided to the 72,000 WIC participants who receive food vouchers each month. It's an exciting change which is getting a lot of attention. The attention is coming from the fact that for over 2 decades the food packages have remained the same.
The new rules support and promote breastfeeding as the preferred diet for baby. The new changes also help those who have cultural food preferences as well as providing a wider variety of foods. Some include:
• baby foods including fruits, vegetables, and baby food meat for exclusively breastfed infants
• whole grain cereals, whole wheat bread, soft corn or whole wheat tortillas, and brown rice
• canned salmon
• canned beans in addition to dried beans for ease of serving
• fresh fruits and vegetables
