AIDS is one of the leading causes of death of Americans between the ages of 25 to 50. Many people now infected did not believe it would ever happen to them. And, there are many people out there who are HIV positive and don't know it.
HIV means "human immunodeficiency virus". Once you become infected with the virus it begins to attack your own body cells. It destroys the white blood cells which are the ones needed for the immune system (the system in the body which destroys germs and fights of infections and disease). The more the Immune System weakens, the stronger the infection becomes. When a person's white blood cell count falls below 200, they are diagnosed with AIDS. It may take as long as 10 years for someone to get AIDS after they have been infected with the virus. If you are infected and don't know it, you can spread the virus to other people. HIV is spread 3 ways:
Having vaginal, anal, and/or oral sex with someone who has HIV
Sharing needles or syringes with someone who has HIV
A mom can pass the HIV Virus to her baby during childbirth or pregnancy
HIV is present in blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk.
HIV/AIDS testing and counseling is available at the Tooele County Health Department. The testing is confidential and available by appointment. The fee for the testing is $15.00, but special consideration will be given to those unable to pay.
