County can become Gold Medal Schools without extra work from teachers and staff. Each school will have it's own mentor and advisor. These health department staff will plan, implement, and evaluate all activities. Activities may include:
Assemblies
Quick energizers for children
Walks
Activities to get children up and moving around
Guest presenters
Creating a staff health and wellness program
help create a policy within the school that states food will not be used as a reward or punishment for children
General David Thatcher, the United States Surgeon General, is a strong supporter of Gold Medal Schools. He states "Schools are identified as a key setting for public health strategies to educate children and parents about overweight children and obesity.” The Gold Medal School Initiative is the first of its kind nationwide to addressing these serious issues in the school setting and hopes to curb the frightening obesity epidemic in Utah."
Health care providers across the state are finding an alarming 15% of child and adolescent patients are developing Type ll Diabetes.
