Walk to School Day, 2006 |
Dugway Elementary held their walk to school day Friday, October 5, 2006. It was a very wet rainy morning. The school had 128 students participate out of 148. The PTA served hot chocolate and muffins to the students when they arrived at school. Teachers also gave out pencils with the logo "Sharp Kids Walk to School Safely" to all the students who walked to school. About 60 parents walked with their children. Some parents also helped with children at the crosswalks. |

Students had an assembly about Big Foot. After learning all about him, the students wanted to walk as he did. Staff developed
a walking program where each student
could earn small plastic feet which are
different colors. Students will keep their
"feet" on a ring and as they earn the
different mile levels they get prizes. Students earn walking feet when they walk the Gold Medal Mile as well.

Dugway Elementary students were bussed to a grocery store in Tooele for a discussion on healthy 5 - A - Day Foods. They sampled healthy foods and learned about fresh and frozen foods as well. They were told that the color of the food helps determine how healthy it is for the body.
The children also learned the benefit of eating up to nine servings a day of fruits/and/or vegetables. They were shown that a serving size is about the size of their two hands cupped together. |
