ParasitesParasites are microscopic organisms which lives in or on a host.  A host can be either a human being or another animal, but it must be alive.  A parasite obtains its nourishment (food) from the host without the host even knowing the parasite is there until they become sick.

Some parasites are harmless, while others can make their host extremely sick.

The word parasite is Greek - parasitos - meaning “one who eats at the table of someone else".

crypto parasiteParasites join two other types of organisms called viruses and bacteria.  These other two organisms can live on the surfaces of the foods we eat as well as countertops and other surfaces we touch.  These surfaces don't have to be alive.  But a parasite can only live on a host which is alive.

Crypto parasite must be magnified at least 100x to be seen under the miscropeThe Crypto parasite looks like the one on the left.  It almost looks like a bug. It is also called a germ and sometimes a microorganism.  Microorganisms are so small they can't be seen except through a powerful microscope.  The crypto parasite you see here has been magnified over 100x so it can be seen.

Once the crypto parasite is in a human being, it lives in their intestinal tract and causes them to be very sick.
