Day Care Providers and Crypto

Since Crypto is spread by fecal contamination Day Care Centers are at high risk for Crypto Diapersspreading Crypto.  The Tooele County Health Department advises Day Care Providers to be
cautionary and follow safe guidelines, especially
during the times of the year cases of crypto are high.

Vigilance is key

The spread of Crypto is most rampant to those children who are not toilet trained - and those who care for these children and change their diapers.

Daycare providers and workers must be vigilant about the hygiene and sanitary practices which are in place at the centers they own, operate, or staff.

Good vigilance policies:

Day Care Center Techniques When the children come in the morning, have them go potty and help them wash their hands with soap and water
Day Care Center Techniques If the child does not need to go potty, take them to the bathroom and teach/observe them properly washing their hands
Day Care Center Techniques Best case scenario is staff who prepare and serve food not change and diaper children as      part of their job
Day Care Center Techniques Continually educate parents/caregivers about bringing in their ill children
Day Care Center Techniques Exclude all children who have diarrhea
Day Care Center Techniques Ask parents to have a proper medical diagnosis performed for their children brought
in to the center if they have diarrhea
Day Care Center Techniques Notify the Tooele County Healthno crypto Department if children at your day care have diarrhea -       Crypto is a reportable disease

Schedule in-service training for your staff at least once a year and ensure all new workers are educated about the policy of your day care center and crypto:

  • Talk about Crypto, define it, discuss how it is spread, prevention, and control measures you expect to be performed
  • Remind them to continually talk with parents about children who are ill or have diarrhea
  • Be firm about your no-crypto policy
  • Consider grouping the children in your center - those who come in every day may be in one group and children who attend sporadically may be in another group
  • Teach your staff proper handwashing techniques:
         1. Wet hands with warm water
         2,  Apply soap
         3.  Vigorously rub hand together, up to and including the elbow, for 20 seconds
         4.  Rinse hands with warm water
         5.  Dry hands with a paper towel - never cloth
         6.  Dispose of paper towel properly

If you have a pool or swimming area at your daycare:

  • Do not allow sick children to play in the water until they are symptom free
  • Avoid boisterous play and splashing
  • Don't allow children to swallow water - if the child can't follow the rule, don't allow them in the pool area
  • Make sure all children and adult supervisors wash up using soap and water before and after water play - children who wear diapers must have a "bottom wash" with soap and water and a clean, dry diaper

Good diapering policies:
  • Diaper changing area is in an enclosed space where children do not play or eat
  • Diaper changing stations are installed - do not use a bed or the floor
  • Disposable gloves are a must - discard after every diaper change
  • Diaper changing includes washing the child's bottom with soap and water
  • Place a tossable paper or plastic shield (like the one shown on the right )between the diaper changing station and the child Baby Changing padbefore every diaper change - dispose of the used shield - every diaper change gets a new paper or plastic shield
  • Children who wear diapers must wear plastic pants over the diaper which are snug at the waist and the legs to keep stools inside the diaper
  • Staff members wash their hands as well as the child's hands with soap and water after each diaper change
  • Sing to child while washing - Twinkle Twinkle little star - Mary had a little lamb - Happy Birthday to me, etc - Jingles take about 20 seconds to sing and ensure a good hand wash
  • Wipe up all diaper changing areas with a sanitizing wipe or spray mixture of chlorine bleach and water over the area and wipe down

Follow all directives issued from the Tooele County Health Department when necessary - Crypto must be reported and the health department is responsible for follow up
