A pandemic is described as a global disease outbreak.  It is caused by:

  • a new influenza virus which occurs in the population and humans have no immunity against it
  • This virus begins to cause serious illness
  • Spreads easily and rapidly through the entire world from person to person
 

Pandemics have happened in the the past:

  • 1918: 675,000 U.S. deaths and up to 50 million deaths worldwide
  • 1957: 70,000 U.S. deaths and 1-2 million deaths worldwide
