The Novel H1N1 Virus or S-0IV flu is spread from person to person through respiratory droplets released into the air when a sick person sneezes or coughs. They are propelled as far away as two miles. Some droplets remain in the air, others land on objects or people. If the droplet lands on a person, or is picked up by a person touching something the virus is on, then illness will most likely result if good handwashing techniques have not been used.
The masks are useful when worn by someone who is sick. The mask will help contain the droplets from being propelled in the air. Second to a mask, coughing or sneezing into the elbow or upper arm is helpful in preventing the spread of virus.
The masks will not help a person who is well if they touch something which contains the live virus, then touches their eye, ear, nose, mouth, or open sore. The mask will not protect against droplets picked up by someone who is well.
Masks should be worn by those who are SICK to help prevent the spread of the virus. Caregivers who are taking care of a person with Novel H1N1 Virus or S-0IV flu may benefit from wearing a mask, however, proper handwashing techniques are a must.
