Each year, approximately 72,000 kids are killed from unintentional injuries.Bike Helmet Injury PreventionIn addition, riders suffer serious head injuries annually.  Wearing a bike helmet may not prevent a fall from a bike, however, wearing a bike helmet reduces the risk of serious injury. Consider these facts from the CDC:
Bike Crashesthere are 500 deaths per year from bike crashes
Bike Crashesthere are 17,000 hospitalizations each year from bike crashes
Bike Crashesbike crashes are responsible for 153,000 emergency department visits each year
Bike CrashesTwo-thirds of bicycle-related deaths are due to no helmet use
Bike CrashesOne-third of non-fatal bicycle injuries are due to no helmet use

Bike Helmet Injuries The rate of injury is highest for children aged 5-15 years
Bike Helmet InjuriesThe rate of death is highest for children aged 10-14 years

Each spring and summer the health department offers Multi Sport Bike Helmet Promotions.  Regular bike helmets protect the head during bike riding alone. Using a Multi Sport Helmet  offers more protection, however.   These helmets, when used properly, protect during any non-motorized sport including bikes, skate boards, roller blades, etc.

How do you encourage your child to wear a helmet????? Try these suggestions  from the National Safe Kids Coalition:

1. Let your child help pick out the helmet. After all, your child will be the one wearing it.

2. Always insist your child wears the helmet.

3. Wear your own helmet every single time you ride yourself!

4. Praise and reward your child each time they wear their helmet as they should.

5. Begin the habit early in life; with their first riding toy!

6. Encourage other parents to purchase helmets for their children.  Help eliminate the situation of "being different.  There's strength in numbers!

Proper fit!

Bike Helmet Promotion

Education is an important piece of the health department's helmet fitting program.  Participants are required to attend a short presentation on bike safety, proper helmet fitting, and injury prevention when they obtain one of our helmets.

The most important part of bicycle safety is your helmet!

Make sure it fits. It should cover your forehead and the upper part of the back of the head. Don't wear it above your forehead! When you purchase your helmet, make sure it has been crash tested and has a safety sticker inside.

Most helmets come with removable pads inside. The smaller the head, the thicker the pads will be. As the head grows, you can change the size of the pads to a smaller one so your helmet will be more comfortable.
