Environmental concerns A recent study by the United States Geological Survey found low levels of drugs (antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives, and steroids) in 80% of the rivers and streams tested

Environmental concerns  Flushed drugs are not removed in sewage  treatment facilities and septic tank systems—they enter the soil, surface water, and  groundwater
Environmental concerns Animals, adults, and children are poisoned by drugs they find on the ground surrounding trash containers
Environmental concerns Pollution prevention—the elimination or minimization of the pollution source— helps clean up the environment

Diabetes testing and treatment supplies should be disposed of carefully - they should never be placed directly in the trash

  • Sharps ContainersImproper disposal of needles, lancets, and syringes (“sharps”) injures hundreds of healthcare workers, sanitation inspectors, and hazardous waste specialists annually
  • NEVER place these items in the trash - use only proper Sharps Containers made exclusively for this use
  • Never, for any reason, flush needles, lancets, and syringes down the toilet
Environmental concerns Improper disposal of prescription and over the counter drugs will harm future generations for decades to come
