If there is absolutely no other choice, and medicines must be discarded, take the following precautions:

mix drugs with undesireable goods before disposingProper disposal of drugs Remove all  personal identification from the bottle or  label— scrape it off with a knife if necessary) and:

Proper disposal of drugs  Mix all unused drugs with used (wet) coffee grounds, moist cat litter, spoiled food, flour mixed with a large amount of salt and water to make a paste, or other undesirable substance and put it in a plastic bag and seal it — make sure it is thoroughly mixed— knead the bag with your hands

Proper disposal of drugs Dispose of it in the trash the same day the trash is collected, don’t leave it outside in the container where it can be found - especially if the trash can will be sitting outside overnight

Proper disposal of drugs If left outside prior to trash pick up day, drugs and containers - even mixed with spoiled food may be stolen to be sold, swallowed, or traded at *"pharming" parties

Proper disposal of drugs  Seal the empty bottle in a plastic bag and dispose in the trash

Proper disposal of drugs Keep the disposal as confidential as possible until after the trash is picked up and disposed of - telling family members and friends about it may encourage vandalism

*"Pharming Parties" are becoming a fast growing trend in the teen population.  Teenagers, Pharming Partyeven younger siblings, gather together at a predetermined destination (usually a home where parents are un-supervising or unavailable). Once together, teens trade drugs from each other and take them, often as a substitute for illicit drugs.Usually, the drugs are dumped into a big bowl and kids reach in and grab a handful to swallow and get high.  Strong narcotics and pain killers can be held back and sold for $30.00 or more per pill.  Most of the time the drugs are stolen from parents or other family members.  Sometimes they are purchased illegally on line. What teenagers don't comprehend, however, is the danger of mixing drugs and taking them together. They don't understand the ramifications or contraindications of mixing drugs.
