The sucess of the Tooele County Health Department's Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Project has received national and state recognition for its positive open,
honest communication with teens and their parents for nearly a decade.

The goal of TCHD's prevention program has a strong abstinence (saving sex until marriage) focus. The core message is for teens to abstain from sexual activity.

The program has reached over 200,000 teens through education, one on one counseling, parental involvement, and activites in the community.

The Youth Abstience Education Project activities are designed to support the youth of Tooele County and provide them with knowledge and good decision-making skills. These skills help them make good choices.


The Youth Abstinence Education Project is multi-focused using multiple components which support the abstinence messages. Some of these components are:
Building Self-Esteem	Values and goal setting
Communication skills	Understanding human physiology/anatomy
Peer Pressure Conseq.	Understanding the dynamics of parenthood
Relationship building	Learning how to say "NO" in uncomfortable situations
Enhancing Self Control	Learning the dangers of Sexually Transmitted Disease
Understanding the consequences of risky behavior

Parents are the prime sexuality educator for their children. Nothing can take the place of regular, honest communication between a parent and a child. Sometimes talking with a child is difficult for a parent. Some parents aren't comfortable with the topic themselves. Others worry they may not be able to answer questions about sex. The Tooele County Health Department is looking for parents, single people, community leaders, teens (especially teen parents), and other community members who have an interest in our youth and would like to help get the abstinence message out. If you have an interest in teen pregnancy prevention, and would like to be involved, we welcome your support. Tooele County's Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Coalition is looking for new members!!
