GSMI was born in the fall of 2001 in conjunction with the Salt Lake Olympic Games in 2002, and continues today as part of the "A Healthier You Legacy". Schools work toward four criteria, one building upon the other:
~Bronze - *$200.00 award
~Silver - *$300.00 award
~Gold - *$500.00 award
~Gold Plus - *500.00
* A cash stipend is also awarded to each participating teacher in the Tooele County School District. For each award level achieved, schools earn cash for physical activity equipment or nutrition equipment (such as a salad bar). This is the first project of it's kind to address the serious issues of obesity in the classroom.
It's no secret healthy children make healthy learners. Research shows,
again and again, that regula r physical activity and good nutrition
contribute to higher academic achievement.
Gold Medal Schools can help make a lasting impact on the children in Tooele School District without placing an extra burden on teachers and support staff.
Each participating school will have a mentor (a college student majoring in health promotion) paid by the Tooele County Health Department who will implement the program and carry the responsibility of program success.
