There are many tests your doctor will perform to help you keep
your diabetes under control. These are a necessary part of keeping
your disease manageable. By keeping control of
your diabetes, you will be lowering your chances of getting other
health related problems.
|
|
|
It will be important to keep all of your doctor appointments and
follow all his/her recommendations. Among other conditions, diabetes
can lead to heart and blood vessel disease, blindness, kidney failure,
and foot ulcers. Although it may seem scary, you can lead a healthy,
happy life and manage your diabetes quite well!
|
Since diabetes can affect every part
of your body, including the major organs, your doctor will
routinely order some (or all) of these tests: |
|
Hemoglobin A1C (HBA 1c) This blood test shows the amount of
sugar in your blood over the last two or three months.
This test will help your doctor determine if your treatment
plan is working.
|
|
Fasting Lipid Profile. This test will measure the total cholesterol
and triglycerides in your blood. This test may show
if your arteries are getting clogged. Do not eat or drink
anything but water for at least 8 hours before having this
test.
|
|
Blood Pressure. This test measures the pressure of blood
against your veins and arteries. High blood pressure can lead
to heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. This test should
be done while you are sitting, with your arms resting on a
flat surface, and your legs UNCROSSED.
|
|
Weight. You and your doctor will choose a healthy weight
to help you control your blood sugar and stay close to your
target.
|
|
Dental Exam. Diabetes can make dental problems worse. See
your dentist at least twice a year and follow his/her suggestions
for brushing and flossing.
|
|
Microalbumin. (Urine Protein.) This test will measure
the amount of protein in your urine. With diabetes,
high blood sugar, and/or high blood pressure, you may eventually
have protein in your urine. This is an early sign that
your kidneys are being affected by diabetes. If it's
found through this test, your physician will treat it so it
doesn't worsen.
|
|
Dilated Eye Exam. After drops are put in your eyes,
the doctor will check the blood vessels in the back of your
eye with a bright light. If found early, eye problems
can be treated to prevent loss of vision.
|
|
Foot exam. Your doctor will check your feet for ulcers, blisters,
cuts, tingling, and numbness. If foot problems are found early
and treated properly, other problems can be avoided.
